Christmas decorations: stars made of balsa wood

Stars in all variations are my favorite Christmas decorations! No matter what material they are made of, stars always bring the festive shine into the house that I love so much at Christmas. As a wall decoration for the brick wall, I made stars from balsa wood myself. A really great material because you can cut the wood super easily with a cutter (I made these pendants out of balsa wood last year). Nevertheless, gluing the individual parts together is a bit tricky because you have to fix it well. But I am sure that from now on I will hang the stars every Christmas.

If you make your own Christmas decorations, you can design them to match the rest of the decoration, how practical. Today I am giving you the instructions for the star made up of eight diamonds, because the one made up of eleven diamonds shouldn’t have worked mathematically at all and so I had to adjust everything with the cutter before gluing. Since you would need at least good to very good math skills for the construction of the star, I simply finished the diamonds as a template, then we save the math tutoring :).

You need:

  • Balsa wood approx. 3 mm thick
  • cutter
  • pencil
  • Wood glue
  • triangle ruler
  • Cardboard box for the stencil
  • Diamond template (the parts are glued together on the gray lines)
  • paint brush
  • Acrylic paint
  • Brackets to fix the parts

How to do it:

Print out the diamond pattern and glue it to cardboard, then the marking will work better. Then draw the diamonds on balsa wood and cut out the eight diamonds with the cutter. You have to work very precisely here, otherwise the parts will not fit together later! Paint the diamonds in your favorite colors and let them dry.

To glue the star together, I always glued two rhombuses together with wood glue and fixed them with clamps. Don’t be surprised, at first the wood glue doesn’t stick at all and takes about 30 minutes until it sets and the parts stick really well. Finally you glue all the parts together to form a star. To hang it up, I drilled a hole in it with a needle and pulled a thread through it.
