Today I’m starting a kind of mini series here, because I’m going to introduce you to several DIY projects made from carpets over the next few weeks. The other day I took a whole bunch of carpets with me from Ikea, which look wonderfully simple and simply great without a pattern. The ideal basis for self-made decorations and accessories and that for just two euros each. Today I start with a handbag, which I will definitely take with me on vacation at the weekend, I like it so much :).
Even if it fits perfectly in my bedroom, it won’t hang on the hook for long – I think the bag will be my new companion for the summer!
- an Ikea carpet “SORTSÖ”
- Fabric scissors
- sewing machine
- braided webbing (or regular webbing)
- golden synthetic leather (I bought it at Stoff & Stil)
- Textile adhesive (Gütermann’s is the best in my experience)
How to do it:
First cut the fringes off the carpet. Then fold it inside out in the middle and sew two edges shut. If your sewing machine has problems with the carpet, try it with a Teflon foot, then the carpet glides better and use a leather sewing needle that can withstand a lot.
Fold the carpet at the bottom seam like the bottom of a paper bag and sew off at the bottom. You don’t necessarily have to take this step, but this way the bag has a bottom.
Since my braided ribbon has wound up, I glued small pieces of artificial leather around it and then sewed the handles on. If your belt strap is different and doesn’t fray, you don’t need to do that (but hey, it looks very chic;)). Sew the handles to the bag.
If you now think the next step is super important and therefore deserves your own photo: I simply forgot about it in the collage above. Cut out the circle, glue it to the bag with textile glue, done.
That was, in a nutshell, the instructions for the handle bag, but it is really not difficult. Next week I’ll show you another project from the Ikea carpets!
